How the door is disassembled. Clear instructions on how to remove the handle latch. How to remove a door handle with a magnetic lock

There are two types of broken interior door handles. Most often, when you press the handle, it simply scrolls, the door latch does not react to movement and the door does not open. Less often, the spring inside breaks, the handle sags lifelessly and no longer returns to the horizontal position.

Whichever option you encounter, to solve the problem, the door handle must first be disassembled and removed. The sequence of work depends on the design and features of the device of a particular model. Therefore, before we begin describing the technology for removing and disassembling the handle, let's look at what parts it consists of.

Door handle design

The photo below shows the design of the simplest door handle.

The first is the handle itself (in our case, a push handle). A plastic ring is attached to it, which ensures a tight fit of the handle to the base. It is also called a “rosette”, decorative flange or strip. There is a return spring inside it, which guarantees the stability of the horizontal position of the handle.

The next two elements are the travel stop and the locking ring. Their task is to prevent the handle from scrolling further than the required trajectory. All these components are sequentially located on the rod (Square in the image) and secured with a locking screw. The rod, in turn, is inserted into the locking mechanism and drives the latch.

The next photo shows the disassembled handle on the socket with a slightly more complex design of some parts.

Having understood the names and purpose of each of the elements, let’s move on to the sequence of removing the handle from the door and disassembling it.

Step-by-step instructions for performing the work

  1. First of all, remove the handle (indicated in the photo above). It is attached to the rod with a locking screw, or, in the simplest case, secured with a spring-loaded locking pin. We unscrew the screw with a screwdriver or a hexagon, depending on the shape of the groove on it. If we are dealing with a spring-loaded pin, then you need to press it inward with a nail and forcefully pull the handle away from the door.
  2. By removing the handle, we gain access to the socket. If the mounting screws are visible on the socket, then by unscrewing them we can immediately remove it from the rod. But more often there will be a special overlay on top of the fasteners (a decorative flange - in the photo above it is labeled as a socket). It will have a groove where it meets the door, by which it can be pryed with a screwdriver and removed. Perhaps the trim just needs to be turned counterclockwise if it is held on by the thread. By removing the decorative trim we gain access to the mounting screws that secure the socket itself. Since access to them is open and nothing is in the way, they will be easy to unscrew with a screwdriver.

It happens that the socket, just like the handle in other designs, has a hole in the end: there is a spring-loaded pin in the recess. In this case, to remove the socket, you need to press on it with a nail, while simultaneously pulling the socket off the rod. If you find a hole, but there is no pin in it, this means that when installing the handle, the socket was turned around its axis and the pin is located somewhere else. You can find it by smoothly turning the socket with a nail inserted into the recess until the nail rests on the pin.

After disassembling the handle in the suggested sequence, you will be able to determine the exact design of your particular model. And based on its characteristics, draw conclusions about what exactly caused the breakdown and how to fix it.

Types of handles for interior doors

Door handles are sold in two types: “knob” and “rosette”. The handle of the knob is usually hollow and light, while the handle on the rosette is made of more massive materials and is usually non-hollow inside. Over time, when the spring mechanism wears out, the first structure may begin to wobble or even sag. The second is that it will last longer and be more comfortable to use. Accordingly, their prices differ: the most budget-friendly options are knob handles.

The shape of the handles is divided into rotary And push. The push button has a classic handle shape: when you press it, the door latch is hidden in the lock body and the door opens. The rotary handle has a ball shape, which makes it less noticeable. In addition to the difference in design, these two designs differ in features that are not obvious at first glance.

The rotary handle is more compact: it is more difficult to accidentally touch it when passing by the door. And if this happens, it will not be as painful as with a push handle. At the same time, using a ball-shaped pen every day with wet or oily hands from cream is very inconvenient - your hands slip. So, if used regularly on kitchen or bathroom doors, the push handle will create fewer problems for you.

The door plays an important role in the house and performs various functions. There are many types of such designs that can be complemented with certain accessories, such as handles.

This product is a kind of mechanism that allows you to open a kind of damper. Modern onyx doors are equipped with various types of handles, allowing you to match them to a specific style of room.

Analysis of pressure structures

This type of pen is very popular and is used everywhere today. In order to dismantle such a product, you often only need one screwdriver of a certain size.

The parsing process can be divided into several stages:

  • First of all, you need to unscrew a special screw, which can be found on the side or bottom. This all depends on the model. Sometimes, instead of a screwdriver, you need to use a hex wrench, which you need to select according to size. Then remove the decorative trim.
  • At this stage you need to unscrew the main fastener, which has a thread. To do this, you just need to turn it several times in a certain direction.
  • When all the fasteners are unscrewed, you can remove the handle. To do this, simply pull it towards you, slightly holding the other side of the product.

Let's look at how to dismantle round-type door handles, which can be divided into two types:

  • Products with socket. Parsing them is quite simple. To do this, first of all you need to look for a screw fastening, in the form of a bolt or screw. Unscrew it and remove the handle. When such an item is not provided for by the design, then you need to hold one side of the item, turn the other a little, remove it from the thread and pull it towards you. After this, you can begin dismantling the socket and other components of the lock.
  • Noba handles. This type of product is much more difficult to disassemble. To do this, it is recommended to use a special key with which you need to clamp the spring mechanism. First of all, remove the decorative trim, then, using a key or nail, move the spring-loaded pin. All this is done in a special technical hole. Then gently pull the handle and remove it. Be sure to also remove the latch from the decorative flange by gently tapping it.

Removing the handle is a fairly simple procedure that just requires care and the correct sequence.

How to disassemble the door handle knob, watch the video:

It often happens that it is necessary to promptly repair a door handle or replace it with a new one. If you are a “man with hands”, then the problem will probably seem far-fetched to you, but if you have taken a screwdriver in your hands in ancient times, or are a fragile woman and are not familiar with this specificity, then the problem is to find a master for such a small task sometimes it becomes quite large.

Today we will look at how to disassemble a door handle, looking at several options for the most popular models.

So, in order to disassemble a door handle, you must immediately understand how it works.

They may differ in the following ways:

  • Be overhead or mortise. The first option is placed on a special bar, and the second has a locking mechanism that is installed inside the door.
  • Mobile and stationary. With stationary ones, everything is clear - they can neither turn nor press, but simply serve as a grip when opening the door. Mobile ones are their complete opposite.
  • Movable handles, in turn, are divided into push and turn handles.(and knobs).

Naturally, each type of handle has its own fastening:

  • Stationary ones that do not have internal mechanisms are secured mainly with screws or through screw connections. These products can be either single-sided or double-sided, exterior and interior, equipped with or without an axial element. Dismantling such handles is the easiest - you just need to unscrew all the screws.

  • Lever handles are a more complex mechanism, necessarily equipped with a locking system in the form of a latch tongue that fits into a reciprocal groove on the door, and a central axial element. Such handles can be used on absolutely any door.

Advice! This type of handle is rightfully considered the most reliable, and if made from high-quality metal, it rarely fails.

  • Unlike a push handle, which can additionally be equipped with a full-fledged lock, rotary-type products are used mainly in the form of interior solutions. No, you can use keys here, but such locks are usually not reliable in terms of security.
  • The products are very compact and quite convenient to use. There is an axle rod inside that also controls the halyard tongue.
  • The price of these models is quite low, so they are found everywhere. However, it is worth noting the rather low reliability and frequent jamming of the mechanism, which is why repair and replacement of these products are required more often than others.

The structure of door handles

Without knowing how the handle works, it’s more expensive to take it apart, so let’s look at the structure of the standard version, using the push mechanism as an example.

So, these pens consist of:

  • The handle itself;
  • Latches;
  • Decorative strip or rosette;
  • Decorative flange;
  • Removable key;
  • The core is in the form of a rectangular rod;
  • Fastening elements.

The handle equipped with a lock also includes a cylinder and several keys for it.

Removing the door handle

To work, we need, in fact, only one tool - a Phillips screwdriver (a slotted one doesn’t hurt either) or a screwdriver. If you want to perform not only dismantling, but also replacement, you may also need: a drill, a drill bit, a hammer, a chisel, a router, a tape measure and a pencil.

  • Dismantling begins with the door being fixed in the open position using some kind of support or wedge so that it is convenient for you to work.

  • Next, using a removable key or a small slotted screwdriver, press the small button at the base of the handle, as shown in the photo above. This button serves as a lock. If it is not there, then look for a screw tightening.

  • Sometimes the locking pin (button) is located under the decorative flange. If necessary, carefully pry it up with a screwdriver and pull it towards you, freeing all the necessary fastening parts of the structure.

  • The cover is held in place by two latches, which need to be pryed off.

  • The second handle is removed in the same way, under which we see the heads of the screws that hold the mechanism.

  • Unscrew the fasteners and freely remove the remaining parts of the handle. Everything is extremely simple and intuitive.
  • If you need to remove the latch, you need to unscrew two screws from the end of the door, after which the mechanism is pushed from the side of the handle and completely removed.

Now you can perform all the steps necessary to repair it and reassemble the mechanism in reverse order. Round (rotary) knob handles are removed in exactly the same sequence; in fact, the only difference is in the structure of the handle itself.

Handle repair

So, we have essentially figured out how to remove and put back door handles with our own hands. Let's now talk a little about the possible reasons for the failure of these mechanisms, as well as how they can be quickly and efficiently repaired.

  • The most common problem is jamming, and this can happen for various reasons, from a simple lack of lubrication of rubbing parts to foreign interference.
  • For example, there are cases when the screws on which the handle is attached rest against the moving parts, causing them to jam. Try removing them one by one, checking them at the same time. If, indeed, the handle starts to work normally, then select shorter screws.

  • If there is no lubricant, it must be replenished. For these purposes, special compounds are used, which can be purchased at your nearest hardware store.
  • If you have nowhere to buy it, you can use a piece of lead taken from a regular pencil. It is placed inside the mechanism and crushed.

  • Sometimes you may encounter the fact that even with slight force, the push handle simply breaks off, as in the photo above. Of course, most often the reason is that the manufacturer uses low-quality alloys, but durable products can also break. What is the reason?
  • The fact is that some models of handles (manufacturers always save money) are equipped with a core that is too short. Because of this, when you press the handle, it experiences much greater loads than it should. If you see such a situation during installation, then you should not hope for a better outcome, go to the store and replace the product, or simply buy a separate core, which costs mere pennies.

Now you know not only how to disassemble a Chinese door handle, but also how to put it in order if something happens. The instructions are simple, but if anything remains unclear, check out the video in this article.

It would be useful for every owner to know how to disassemble the door handle on an interior door. This element is exposed to daily impact from the residents of the house, and the handle is not always treated with care, and therefore sooner or later it may break or you simply want to change it to a new model. In this case, in order not to call a specialist, you can do everything yourself. In addition, disassembling and reassembling a door handle yourself is not so difficult.

Different types of door handles are disassembled differently

Types of handles

Before you start work, you need to decide on the type of fittings. All door handles can be divided into several groups. This classification is perhaps the determining factor when disassembling the structure. So let's take a look:

  • Stationary. Not connected in any way to the lock or latch. Serves solely to move the door leaf. Attaches with simple screws or self-tapping screws. It can be one-sided or two-sided, connected by an axial element.
  • Push. Usually it has the form of an L-shaped structure with fastening on both sides of the canvas. When a load is applied to the handle, it causes the halyard tongue to move and allows pressure to open the door.
  • Rotary. The principle of operation is the same as that of the push model, but you need to turn the handle; most often, such models look like a ball or a button.

Main types of handles for interior doors

Due to its shape, the push model has a certain disadvantage: it can easily be hit. The disadvantage of rotary samples is that a person’s hand can slip along its surface, which makes it difficult to open the door.

There are also models with a decorative flange and on a rosette. What are their main differences? When using a socket, you do not need to drill a huge hole in the door. In addition, such a handle is full-bodied and heavy. But decorative overlays are usually large in diameter and are installed on lightweight hollow nobs with a lock or latch. Both options are worth considering.

Why disassemble the handle

Since these models of door handles are disassembled quite simply and according to a similar principle, anyone can learn how to do this without any problems. But disassembling and assembling handles is not a routine process; the need for this does not always arise. What could lead to such a need?

  • Breaking. This is one of the most common reasons, especially for cheap Chinese products. Over time or due to rough handling and ignoring preventive measures, the mechanism wears out and some of its parts fail, so it is necessary to carry out timely repairs to the fittings.
  • Replacement of an outdated model. Every year new product models enter the market and it makes sense to replace old models with more advanced ones in technical and aesthetic terms.
  • Repair. When renovating a house, most often the interior changes radically in terms of style, so the old door handle may not be suitable and then it needs to be disassembled and replaced.
  • Scuffs. The lower the quality of the decorative coating, the sooner such a handle will become unusable due to the appearance of abrasions, peeling paint or chips on its surface. It is better to replace such fittings if you do not want to spoil the overall impression of the room.

During long-term use, the handle mechanism often fails.

Push

The most popular model of handles for interior doors is push-type. In order to disassemble this type of product, you only need to take one screwdriver. First, unscrew the handle itself, that is, the pressure element. On the side or bottom of such models there is a small recess with a hidden screw; you need to unscrew it with a screwdriver and then remove the element from the axis. In some cases, you may need a hex wrench instead of a screwdriver.

After this, remove the decorative trim that masks the main fastener; in most models it has a thread, so you just need to turn it several times. The screws will open in front of you. Carefully unscrew them and pull the structure towards you, holding the handle on the other side, now you can remove it along with the rotating axial element.

If you need to disassemble a latch or lock, the steps are carried out in the same order, but in addition you need to unscrew the plate from the end of the blade and remove the mechanism installed in it.

Push door handle

Round with rosette

Now let's look at how to disassemble a round door handle. The principle of operation is very similar, but the main difference lies in the method of removing the decorative turning part. If there is no hole for a key or screwdriver on the side of the handle, then you need to manually separate the elements. To do this, hold the handle on one side of the door motionless, and turn the other part and remove it from the thread; you may just need to pull it towards you.

After that, remove the socket in the same way and unscrew the screws. Remove the axle and proceed to other elements: the lock or latch, if necessary. When removing decorative parts, it is important not to overdo it so that some elements of the mechanism do not burst.

Round door handle with rosette

Nobs

In order to disassemble the round knob handle, you will need an additional special key to clamp the spring mechanism.

The key included in the kit may not be the right length; in this case, it can be replaced with a nail or other thin object.

First, remove the decorative trim from the top. Using a wrench or nail, move the spring-loaded pin, inserting the tool into the access hole on the side, while simultaneously pulling the handle and removing it along with the cap. After this, you need to pry the latch of the decorative flange and remove it too. Then unscrew the mounting screws on the plate. Now you can completely disassemble the handle and remove both parts along with the axle.

As you can see, there is nothing complicated. In order to assemble the handle, you need to perform all the manipulations in the reverse order: first, install the lock and fix it with a plate, then insert the axle and put on the fasteners, and only then assemble the decorative parts. Don’t forget that you first need to thread the decorative flange, and then put on the pressure or rotary part itself.

Nowadays, almost any interior door is equipped with such a thing as a door handle. Moreover, we are not talking about an ordinary handle, for example, a round one, which you can simply grab, but about a mechanism that allows you to open and close the door and, if necessary, keep it in the closed position, despite the efforts made to open it. Such a mechanism is, for example, a latch with a lock. With use, door hardware wears out and any handle simply breaks.

Today we will talk about how to disassemble and dismantle it.

Features of various designs

First, let's talk about the designs of door handles and their features.

  • The first category we will look at is – stationary models. These are the most common solutions for interior doors. Such fittings are now practically not used. Perhaps on doors installed back in the days of the Soviet Union, which have not been modernized since then. And it is usually not used in residential premises. Outwardly it looks like a bracket. There are two varieties of this model. The difference between them is that they can be one-way or end-to-end.

If we talk about the latter, then long screws are used to fix 2 handles, which are placed on different sides of the door leaf - one opposite the other.

This type of handle can be removed very easily - just unscrew the bolts that hold this structure in place. Such fittings can literally be called cheap, since they have a minimal price. And it’s pointless to repair it, because it can’t be understood.

  • The next option is push design. This design decision will be a little more complicated. The handle is a lever-type product: the working elements, thanks to the axis, are connected to the lock mechanism. Some options of this type are additionally equipped with a latch that locks the locking part.

Such a handle can be dismantled using a screwdriver with a narrow blade. By the way, such a handle can have a lock with a metal core.

  • Another design worth mentioning is rotary model. It has a lot of differences from the above-mentioned options, which lie in the shape and design features. The general principle of operation is the same as that of other models.
  • The next option for the devices under consideration for an interior door is handle with rosette. Such handles have a round shape and, depending on the design, can be disassembled using different algorithms. They also differ in the method of securing the decorative element. The spherical shape is very convenient to use. Such models are also called knobs.

In general, as you can see, there are a large number of door handles for interior doors. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages, at the same time, the algorithm for disassembling them will be approximately the same.

Required Tools

To disassemble the door handle, you will need to have a certain tool on hand. Regardless of its type, there may be some hidden elements and parts in it that cannot always be pulled out using conventional tools.

For this reason, you should have the following list of tools on hand:

  • hammer;
  • screwdriver;
  • drill and set of drills with a crown;
  • pencil;
  • awl;
  • square

How to disassemble and remove?

Removing a door handle is quite simple if you have the above-mentioned tools, as well as a little theoretical knowledge of the structure of this mechanism.

To do this, you must follow these steps.

  • Support and secure the door well so that it is in a stationary position.
  • Now you need to pry up the decorative flange and pull it out a little. Underneath there are fasteners that need to be unscrewed.
  • On the mentioned flange of the pressure part there is a special pin, which is locking and spring-loaded. It should be pressed in using a screwdriver. In rotary versions it is usually located in the housing. To get there, you need to insert a key or an awl. If you cannot feel it, then you should rotate the flange until it comes into contact with the pin.

  • Now you should press the pin and at the same moment pull out the handle structure.
  • Now unscrew the fastening bolts.
  • We separate the inside of the element from the outside, take out the handle and the decorative flange.
  • If there is a need to remove the latch for replacement or repair, then you should unscrew the screws that secure it to the side of the door block, then remove the bar, and then the mechanism itself.

When installing fittings to a different position, it is better not to disassemble it for spare parts. It is easily attached to the door structure, but in the reverse order.

Now we’ll tell you directly about the disassembly of each category of handles.

  • Let's start with the stationary, which does not have a push set, and is also not equipped with a mortise lock. In order to unscrew such a handle, you will need a Phillips or flat-head screwdriver. Alternatively, you can use a screwdriver. Dismantling must begin by loosening the screws that secure the mechanism.

If there are decorative elements, they must first be removed. As you unscrew the bolts, you should hold the counter parts on the back side of the blade. If this is not done, the structure may simply fall out of the canvas and become deformed.

It should be noted that the fastening can be one- or two-sided; accordingly, the structure can be disassembled in different ways, which means that this must be taken care of in advance. When all the bolts are unscrewed, you need to carefully remove the handle from the door leaf using a flat-tip screwdriver. In place of the old handle, another mechanism is installed or the same design, but with new spare parts.

  • If you lead we are talking about disassembling a round handle with a rosette, then it is necessary to clarify that the word “socket” is usually understood as a mechanism that allows you to lock the lock using a small key on one side, which is not used on the other side. There is a special lamb on the second side. In this situation, disassembling the mechanism will be carried out according to the following algorithm:
    1. first loosen the screws that hold the linings that perform a decorative function on both sides;
    2. the screws connecting the mechanism on both sides are unscrewed;
    3. the handle structure is pulled out and the remaining part is removed;
    4. The locking mechanism is pulled out.

If the handle requires repair or any part of it needs to be replaced, then you should completely disassemble the individual elements and determine the cause of the malfunction. It is necessary to especially carefully monitor the safety of all small structural elements, otherwise if they are lost, it will simply not be possible to put the mechanism back together.

  • Now Let's talk about disassembling the round knob handle. To remove this element from the door leaf, the following steps are usually performed.
    1. The fastening bolts on one side of the door are unscrewed.
    2. The mechanism is dismantled through special holes.
    3. The additional counter-type strip is disassembled. To dismantle this element, simply pull it in your direction.

The non-removable round handle is fixed using the simplest screws for fastening. This mechanism is made with the expectation that later no repair work will be carried out, but a new spare part will simply be purchased, which will take the place of the old handle.

  • Push options. Usually they are used instead of rotary solutions. This is due to the fact that they are durable and very easy to use and repair. Disassembly is performed as follows:
    1. first, the screws holding the decorative cloth of the overhead type, which performs the function of a clamp, are unscrewed;
    2. after this careful removal of the overhead sheets located on both sides;
    3. the fastening bolts are unscrewed and the round-shaped structural elements located on both sides of the door leaf are pulled out;
    4. All that remains is to open the strike plate and the lock itself, and then pull them out of the fitting grooves.

How to fix it?

Door handle repairs are often carried out in the following situations:

  • the handle sticks and is difficult to turn;
  • the handle does not return to its normal position after pressing;
  • the handle falls out, but the base is not damaged;
  • The tongue does not move when pressed.

As a rule, the cause of these malfunctions is wear and tear of parts due to constant use. For this reason, it is necessary to periodically lubricate the lock and mechanism spare parts and clean everything from dirt. When lubricating, the product is rotated so that the liquid evenly falls on all elements and parts. If the handle becomes loose, the fasteners should be adjusted and tightened.

Sometimes it is necessary to repair the fittings of an entrance or interior iron door. If we are talking about an interior door, then repair or replacement of the mechanism is usually carried out when the handle falls out.
