The model was calibrated in such a way that the output yielded the same statistical spread as in field tests. It made it possible to track the entire “life cycle” of a knot, starting with the formation of a small loop and ending with a grandiose tangled lump into which the entire rope turns.
It turned out that the entanglement mechanism is as follows: after the first turn, the rope forms concentric turns that overlap each other. Then one of the free ends of the rope begins to crawl through the individual rings, and with a 50% probability it deviates to the side, bending around rather than piercing the next turn.
