The International Judo Federation has published a world ranking taking into account the results of the World Masters in St. Petersburg. A number of Azerbaijani athletes worsened their positions in the classification, and some dropped out of the top ten altogether. But first things first.
According to the site, who knows what position Orkhan Safarov could be in now if he had taken part in the tournament. But weight problems at the last moment prevented him from fitting into the up to 60 kg category, and as a result he lost second place in the table of ranks. As a result, he was supplanted by the World Masters winner Ryuji Nagayama, and another Japanese is in the lead - world champion Naohisa Takato. At the same time, the rating jump in Nagayama’s rating is also explained by the “lion’s” number of rating points for gold in St. Petersburg - 1700. Well, Safarov can continue his pursuit of the leaders no earlier than next year.
In the up to 66 kg category, the absence of Nijat Shikhalizadeh at the World Masters led to him leaving the top ten and settling in fourteenth position. Our judoka lost eight places in the ranking, however, it was initially known that Nijat was not going to St. Petersburg. One way or another, he dropped out of the number of seeded athletes and will now have to make up for lost time. And the first place in the ranking is occupied by world champion from Japan Hifumi Abe.
In the weight category up to 73 kg, Rustam Orudzhev, who took seventh place in St. Petersburg, dropped one step down. He was surpassed by Odbayar Ganbatar from Mongolia, even though he remained outside the podium at the tournament, losing to Hidayat Heydarov in the small final. True, Ganbatar is only 20 points ahead of Rustam, so the gap is minimal. But Heydarov remained with his own - he is still in fourth position. The first place is taken by the world champion, the winner of the “World Masters” Soichi Hashimoto, the Japanese entered into space orbit in terms of rating. He has 7150 points, and the next one, Ganbatar, has 4988.
In the category up to 81 kg everything is still muted. Rufat Ismailov won the Grand Slam in Baku and then faded into the shadows. He experimented with wrestling at a heavier weight, but nothing came of it. Be that as it may, he ranks twenty-fifth in the table of ranks, and Russian Khasan Khalmurzaev took the lead after his victory in St. Petersburg.
In the weight category up to 90 kg, Mamedali Mehdiyev moved up one step – he is now tenth. Nothing has changed in the situation for Tural Safguliev: he is still seventeenth. The leadership was retained by Serb Alexander Kukolz.
In the category up to 100 kg, Elkhan Mamedov, although he won bronze at the World Masters, remained with his own - fourth place. And Elmar Gasimov, although he became seventh, improved his performance: he is sixth. That is, also sown. Elmar was able to get ahead of the Russian Kazbek Zankishiev, and Michael Correll from the Netherlands retained the first position.
In the super-heavyweight debate, Ushangi Kokauri moved up two places. Moreover, he beat the formidable Japanese Kokoro Kageura and the unyielding Korean Sung-Min Kim. Brazilian David Moura is in the lead, and world judo legend Teddy Riner is only in third place. Yes, the Frenchman won the overall world championship in Morocco, but the rating was not calculated there. While Riner took a break from his career, this is a chance for competitors.

→ Georgiy Zantaraya is the best judoka in the world in the weight category up to 66 kg based on the results of 2015
The International Judo Federation (IJF) has published the World Ranking Lists (WRL) for 2015. The rating is based on the performance of judokas in 2014-2015 at the World Championships, Continental Championships, Masters, Grand Slam, Grand Prix and Open Continental Cups.
The first place in the WRL in the weight category up to 66 kg was taken by the leader of the Ukrainian team Georgiy Zantaraya. The ward of Vitaly Dubrova for the second time in his sports career topped the IJF world ranking list at the end of the year. In 2009, Zantaraya finished the season in first place in the WRL in the 60 kg weight category.
Despite the failures at the World and European Championships, the past year has become one of the most productive in the career of the most titled active Ukrainian judoka. In 2015, Georgiy Zantarai won victories at the prestigious Masters tournament in Rabat and the Grand Prix in Zagreb, silver at the Paris Grand Slam tournament and bronze awards at the Grand Slam in Abu Dhabi and the Grand Prix Pri" in Tbilisi. Successful performances throughout the year allowed the 28-year-old Ukrainian, six months before the end of the Olympic selection, to guarantee himself a license to participate in the 2016 Olympic Games and to be 39 points ahead of Tumurhuleg Davaadorj from Mongolia in the world ranking list, and the silver medalist of the 2015 World Cup, Russian Mikhail Pulyaev by 53 points.
Two more representatives of the Ukrainian team managed to break into the top ten in their weight categories. Bronze medalist of the 2015 European Championship and winner of the Grand Prix tournament in Tbilisi Svetlana Yaremka (+ 78 kg) finished the year in eighth position in the world rankings, and bronze medalist of the World and European Championships, winner of the Grand Prix in Zagreb Yakov Hammo (+ 100 kg) settled in 9th place in WRL.

News: IJF rating list - Russian judo:: Russian Judo Federation
The International Judo Federation has published a new rating list (WRL), which takes into account the results of the World Cups in Prague and Warsaw. It will be valid until the April continental championships, which will be the last competitions for collecting qualifying points for the 2012 Games.
According to the new “report card,” the TOP10 strongest athletes on the planet include fourteen Russians: ten men and four women. One of our athletes, Musa Mogushkov, managed to maintain his leadership in the world rankings in the 66 kg category.
Two of our judokas are represented in the 60 kg categories - Arsen Galstyan (5th place) and Beslan Mudranov (7th), 66 kg - Musa Mogushkov (1) and Alim Gadanov (2), 81 kg - Sirazhudin Magomedov (6) and Ivan Nifontov ( 8), and 100 kg – Sergey Samoilovich (4) and Tagir Khaibulaev (7).
One each in 73 kg Mansur Isaev (5), 90 kg - Kirill Denisov (10) and over 100 kg - Alexander Mikhailin (8).
Four Russian women entered the top ten: Natalia Kondratyeva is ninth in the 48 kg category, Natalya Kuzyutina is fourth in the 52 kg category, Elena Ivashchenko and Tea Donguzashvili are seventh and ninth, respectively, in the weight over 78 kg.
Three more domestic judokas made it into the top twenty: Murat Kodzokov (11th place, 73 kg), Kirill Voprosov (11, 90 kg) and Dmitry Sterkhov (15, +100 kg) and three judokas: Lyudmila Bogdanova (13, 48 kg), Irina Zabludina (15.57 kg) and Vera Moskaluk (17.78 kg)
Among men, the first positions in the ranking are taken by representatives of seven different countries: Uzbek Sobirov (60), Russian Musa Mogushkov (66 kg), Japanese Nakaya (73), Brazilian Guileiro (81), Greek Iliadis (90), Kazakh Rakov (100) and Frenchman Riner (+100).
In the women's section, the Japanese dominate in five of the seven categories: Fukumi (48), Nishida (52), Matsumoto (57), Ueno (63) and Tachimoto (+78), allowing foreigners to lead in only two categories - the French Decos in weight 70 kg and the Brazilian Aguiar - 78 kg.
The flyweight list is still headed by two-time world champion, medalist of the 2008 Games, Uzbek Rishod Sobirov (2190). Lack of more than 1,200 points to the leader, European champion and World Championship medalist Arsen Galstyan (968) is in fifth place, and Beslan Mudranov (760) is in seventh place.

262. Ruslan Kishmakhov, Denis Lavrentiev and Yakub Shamilov – no qualifying points.

Marina Mayorova, Russian Judo Federation, www.judo.ru
Judo is a combat sport without weapons that improves a person not only physically, but also psychologically. And although judo originated in Japan, one judoka became the president of Russia. Yes, we are talking about Vladimir Putin, who became the first Russian to receive the high 8th dan (out of 10 possible) in 2012.
It is very difficult to determine the best of the best in judo. To do this we have compiled a list of 10 Best Judokas of All Time who have won the most medals at the Olympic Games. Victories at the World Judo Championships were also taken into account.
10. Yasuhiro Yamashita (Japan)
- 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles - gold medal.
This Japanese judoka became the last Olympic champion to compete in the absolute category. Athletes of any weight could compete in it to demonstrate that in judo it is not so much physical parameters that are important as technique and tactics. After the 1984 Games, the absolute category was excluded from the Olympic program.
Yamashita became a gold medalist at the World Championships four times, and before his retirement at the zenith of his glory, he won 203 victories in a row. He is currently the vice president of the Japan Judo Federation.
9. Xian Dongmei (China)
The famous judoka from the Chinese national team won two gold medals in the 52 kg weight class. She also managed to twice become a silver medalist at the Asian Championships in 1995 and 2004.
In 2018, Xian's name was inducted into the International Judo Federation (IJF) Hall of Fame.
8. Ayumi Tanimoto (Japan)
- 2004, Athens - gold medal.
- 2008, Beijing - gold medal.
One of the best judokas in the world competes for the Japanese team. Her collection of awards includes not only Olympic gold. Competing in the up to 63 kg weight category, the Japanese athlete won the Asian Games in 2001 and 2004, and also won two bronze medals at the World Championships in 2001 and 2007 and a silver in 2005.
As with Xian Dongmei, Ayumi was inducted into the IJF Hall of Fame in 2018.
7. Masato Uchishiba (Japan)
- 2004, Athens - gold medal.
- 2008, Beijing - gold medal.
Utisiba began his sports career weighing 60 kg, but then moved to a more “heavy” category - 66 kg. He took not only gold at two Olympics, but also silver at the 2005 World Championships and bronze at the Asian competition in 2002.
Unfortunately, the name of one of the best judokas in the world is associated with both glorious sports victories and a loud scandal. In 2013, Masato Uchishiba was sentenced to five years in prison for raping a girl he coached. The judoka himself claimed that sexual contact was by mutual consent, but the court did not believe him.
6. Peter Seisenbacher (Austria)
- 1984, Los Angeles - gold medal.
- 1988, Seoul - gold medal.
The Austrian judo master is ranked sixth in the ranking of the best judokas of our time thanks to two gold medals at the 1984 and 1988 Olympics, a gold medal at the World Championships, as well as numerous medals at the European Championships. Having completed his brilliant sports career, Seisenbacher became the coach of the Azerbaijani judo team in 2012.
Under his leadership, athletes from Azerbaijan performed successfully at the World Championships in Brazil. And Elkhan Mamedov won the world championship for the first time in the history of Azerbaijani judo.
However, in 2017, the Austrian was arrested in Kyiv on charges of sexual crimes.
5. David Douillet (France)
Top 5 best judokas in the world opens big man in every sense of the word. Frenchman David Douillet weighs 125 kg, which is close to the average weight of a sumo wrestler. He was the first non-Japanese judoka to win two world titles (in his weight class and also in the open category) during the same 1995 World Championships.
In total, Douillet won gold at the World Championships five times, and also received a gold medal at the European Championships twice. And the same number of times he was awarded bronze and silver.
In 2011, the International Judo Federation named David Douillet the best male judoka in history.
4. Tadahiro Nomura (Japan)
- 1996, Atlanta - gold medal.
- 2000, Sydney - gold medal.
- 2004, Athens - gold medal.
For many Olympic athletes, a gold medal is considered the main achievement in their sports career. And those who are able to win two medals deserve the status of "elite of the elite." However, the legend of modern judo, the Japanese Tadahiro Nomura, rose to a hitherto unattainable peak in his sport. He is the only judoka to win three Olympic gold medals in a row.
Nomura’s sporting achievements do not end there. He is the winner of a gold medal at the 1997 World Championships and a bronze medal in 2003.
3. Driulis Gonzalez (Cuba)
- 1992, Barcelona - bronze medal.
- 1996, Atlanta - gold medal.
- 2000, Sydney - silver medal.
- 2004, Athens - bronze medal.
The Olympics are an honorable, but very difficult test for an athlete. Especially if this is not the first Olympics in my career. The competitors are getting younger, or in fact you are getting older, and the training methods continue to improve.
And the fact that the Cuban athlete is one of only two female judokas to compete in five Olympic Games shows her high skill and excellent physical condition.
Gonzalez took gold at the World Championships three times, won silver twice and bronze the same number of times.
2. Ryoko Tani (Japan)
- 1992, Barcelona - silver medal.
- 1996, Atlanta - silver medal.
- 2000, Sydney - gold medal.
- 2004, Athens - gold medal.
- 2008, Beijing - bronze medal.
For a long time, Ryoko Tani held the title of the youngest world champion in the history of judo. She was just over 18 years old when she won the gold medal in Hamilton, Canada in 1993.
But this is not what makes the Japanese woman the best judoka of all time. She is the only woman in the history of women's judo to become a 7-time world champion and receive five Olympic medals.
In Japan, Ryoko Tani is so popular that she even became a character in a judo manga (Yawara!). Computer heroes bear her name Games World Heroes 2 (Ryoko Izumo) and Fighter's History (Ryoko Kano).
1. Teddy Riner (France)
- 2008, Beijing - bronze medal.
- 2012, London - gold medal.
- 2016, Rio de Janeiro - gold medal.
This is the most titled judoka in the world in history. Bend your fingers:
- two-time Olympic champion (2012, 2016);
- 11-time world champion;
- five-time European champion;
- three times athlete of the year in France;
- gold finalist of the Mediterranean Games.
The French judoka is only 29 years old, but he dominates judo like no athlete before him. Riner is the first person to win 8 gold medals at the World Judo Championships, doing so every year from 2007 to 2015 (except 2016).
“Teddy Bear,” as fans affectionately call his idol, lost only twice in his entire adult sports career. And since 2010, the best judoka in the world has not lost a single fight, having already won more than 140 victories.
In 2020, Riner aims to win gold at the Tokyo Olympics. If he succeeds, the French athlete will go down in history as the only male judoka to have 4 Olympic medals at once.

After the end of any major international tournament, it is always inevitable that the IJF world rankings will change. So, immediately after the end of the Grand Slam in Paris, an updated version of the list of the best judokas on the planet was released.
The website invites you to follow recent changes, as well as familiarize yourself with the positions of Belarusian judokas in the world rankings.
In the category up to 60 kg, there was a change of leader: now the flyweight category is headed by the Japanese Naohisa Takato, Orkhan Safarov from Azerbaijan is second, and Sharafuddin Lutfillaev from Uzbekistan is in third place. The previous leader of the ranking, Eldos Smetov, did not stay at the top for long, and was already outside the top three.
In the category up to 66 kg, the Korean An Baul retained his leading position, but the winner of the Grand Slam in Paris, Hifumi Abe, displaced the Mongolian Tumurhuleg Davaadorj, rising to second place, and the Olympic champion Fabio Basile completed the top three.
In the category up to 73 kg, the only significant changes that can be noted are the change of third line: to this moment Ahn Changrim was located on it, who displaced Shohei Ono to fourth place. Azerbaijani Rustam Orujov is still in first place, Japanese Soichi Hashimoto is in second.
While it is difficult for anyone to deprive Takanori Nagase of his leadership at -81kg, he is still in first place in the world rankings, even though he did not go to Paris. Olympic champion Khasan Khalmurzaeva is in second place, and American Travis Stevens is also in third. Grand Slam winner Frank de Wit has risen by as much as 17 positions, and is still in fifth place in his weight category.
It would seem that Mashu Baker has been resting for a long time, but his position in the world ranking still does not change: for now the Japanese is in first place. Markus Nyman from Sweden is in second place, and then there are the Parisian finalists: the Frenchman Axel Clerger, who rose to third position, and the Chinese Xunzhao Cheng, who improved his position by as many as 6 lines and is now in fourth place.
In the category up to 100 kg, there is a change of leader again: now the best in the ranking is Cyril Marais from France, who moved Elmar Gasimov from Azerbaijan to second place, the third line is still occupied by Olympic champion Lukas Krpalek.
In the heavyweight division, Teddy Riner still manages to hold first place, even without participating in competitions, just as Daniel Natea managed to remain in second, despite losing in the first round at the Grand Slam, but the third line has changed: Takeshi Ojitani has already moved his compatriot Hisayoshi Harasawa.
